When the Nokia X2 was announced, Microsoft Mobile had also slipped in another interesting piece of news that we had missed. For those who have been deliberating on getting the current Nokia X devices for yourself, perhaps you should give yourself a bit more time.

Microsoft Mobile has announced that version 2 of the Nokia X platform will not be compatible with the current Nokia X, Nokia X+ and Nokia XL devices. Looks like both the current X devices that are being sold here will not be get a taste of the newer OS based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. It’s not all bad news though as the Nokia X and Nokia XL will still get software updates and security patches to iron out bugs and issues.

Yannis Paniaras, Head of the Mobile Phones UX Design Studio at Microsoft in Beijing, said, “Because of the necessary hardware upgrades, the Nokia X software platform 2.0 won’t be available on Nokia X, Nokia X+ or Nokia XL. However, more updates will be coming to further improve the experience of those devices in the coming months”.

It looks like we’ll be seeing a repeat of the Window Phone 7 fiasco all over again; Microsoft announced that Windows Phone 8 will not be coming to devices running the older software. The last update the older devices were supposed to receive last year was Windows Phone 7.8.

If you’re one of those who are comfortable working with custom ROMs and mods, you’re in a much better position though. Recognised Developer dhacker29 has a little something for you over at xda-developers.
