Looks like the already crowded music streaming space in Malaysia will have to squeeze in yet another service provider. The MTV Trax app downloads 100 songs weekly onto a device automatically, and these tracks are claimed to have been curated by MTV. The app is available on iOS, Android, and Windows platforms, and the Premium service can be trialled for 2 weeks from the date of registration. Thereafter, users can continue with the Premium service for a monthly subscription fee of US$ 2.99 (~RM 12.35) on iOS, or US$ 1.70 (~RM 7) for the other two platforms.

Powered by MusicQubed, the MTV Trax app refreshes overnight and stores the downloaded music locally for offline usage. Users will be able to toggle the setting to allow for downloads using mobile data too if necessary, but unlike other mainstream music streaming services, there are no quality settings for the app. After the activation of the app, the very first downloads will take up to 150 MB of data, with subsequent updates requiring much less than that. The tracks are picked from the list of users’ favourite artistes but the curation provides no option to select or search individual tracks. However, users will still be able to create a sort of pseudo-playlist using the Favourites feature by tapping on the ‘Heart’ icon on the track.

A cheaper alternative to the Premium subscription would be to subscribe to the 7 Day Pass option for US$ 0.99 (~RM 4.10) on iOS, or US$ 0.58 (~RM 2.40) for the rest. For an even better deal, try the cheapest option (read: free), which is to wait till the app enters the Lite Mode which will then allow for access to 60 tracks per month on shuffle play. Do note though that this mode is strictly for streaming; no tracks will be downloaded for offline use. Still, there does exist a silver lining for Digi Music Freedom users though as they will be able to download the content at no extra data usage charges, making it possible to listen to new songs every month without paying a cent.

Registering for the app requires users to sign in with either Facebook or Google accounts and does not have a signup method using just an email address. Playlists, or the track that a is user is listening to can also be shared on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+, with an option to unlock the bonus ‘Share to unlock playlist’. This will allow the user to enjoy the unlocked tracks in full, when a person invited via Facebook downloads and tries out the app.
