On May 24th, 2016, Spotify’s family plan just got a whole lot cheaper, just in time for the mid-year school break in Malaysia (June 3rd–12th). You can now get ‘Spotify Premium for Family’ for just RM22.40 per month for yourself and up to five other family members; that’s six Spotify Premium accounts in total, advertisement-free. Spotify is rolling out this new family plan pricing globally, except Canada.
To give you an idea of how affordable this is, prior to this updated pricing, Spotify’s previous family plan in Malaysia has four options — two accounts for RM22.35 per month, three accounts for RM29.90 per month, four accounts for RM37.35 per month, and five accounts for RM44.90 per month. Now you’ll only be paying a fraction of that but get a total of six Premium accounts.
If you must know, it is also slightly cheaper than Apple Music’s family plan, since Apple’s software and services are still operating using US dollar, and the Malaysian ringgit doesn’t seem to be appreciating any time soon. Apple Music’s family plan is at US$5.99 (~RM24.64) per month for six users, in Malaysia. Speaking of US dollar, Spotify Premium for Family’s pricing has also been localized for our market. In the U.S. and in Europe, Spotify’s (or Apple Music’s) family plan is at US$14.99 (~RM61.66) and €14.99 (~RM68.66) per month respectively.
A family plan allows each member to have their own Premium account, playlists, personalization, streaming history, and in effect, their own music recommendations too (like the Discover Weekly playlist). It should be easy enough to add an existing free-tier Spotify user to the family plan, while keeping everything mentioned earlier intact. Naturally, a single Spotify Premium for Family plan will only have one bill (read: only one person will be charged), so depending on the age of the family members, this could either be a good or a bad thing. But hey, it’s only RM22.40 per month. Also a great news, for existing Spotify family plan members who’ve been paying the old prices, they will be automatically updated to the new rate in the next payment cycle.
Spotify’s lowering of its family plan pricing is clearly an answer to Apple Music’s competitive rates. Though released less than a year ago, its was previously reported that there are now 13 million Apple Music subscribers (since there is no free tier). Spotify now has around 30 million Premium subscribers which is a number not to be sneezed at, but if it wants to keep its lead, it has to offer a more attractive package price-wise, which it just did. Under normal circumstances, it doesn’t really make sense for someone to subscribe to two music streaming services. So Spotify is now hoping those than are on services like Apple Music, may decide to go back to Spotify for its less-restrictive platform (web player, Windows Phone version, et cetera).
