Deezer free on mobile

Deezer released two bombshells today with the announcement that its mobile apps are now free to stream for everyone, and a native Mac app is now available in beta.

Deezer’s mobile apps are always free to download, however previously only Premium+ subscribers can login to stream music. The Premium plan only allowed unlimited playback with no ads on the web, while the free Discovery plan is web-only with ads.

Besides being available for all now, Deezer also introduced a few new features, namely Flow, Playlist Radio, and Artist Radio.

Flow is a no-fuss way of just hitting the ‘Play Flow’ button and Deezer will intelligently play non-stop music that is tailored to you, based on your existing music library and past streams. Playlist Radio lets you pick your own playlist to stream, but during playback, new editor-curated tracks will be automatically added into the mix. Premium+ users get an additional ability to skip tracks as many times as they like. Artist Radio is similar to what Spotify is offering for free users as well — the ability to listen to the whole back catalog of a single artist, but in shuffle mode.

In addition to these three, the radio section has been beefed-up with hundreds of new genres, and the ability to browse through what music is hot in a specific region. There will be no time restrictions for all the features mentioned above, even for free users. Of course, to play a specific track or album, you’ll still need a Premium+ subscription of RM14.90 per month.

I have an active Premium+ subscription, so I wasn’t able to test out the ‘free’ features, but chances are, by ‘mobile’, the free Deezer may still be unavailable on Android and iOS tablets, but I could be wrong. In any case, at the time of writing, none of the Deezer versions — web, Mac, or mobile — have these features yet, and it is probably still in the process of being rolled out to all.

Deezer for Mac beta

The second big news announced today is that Deezer has finally taken the wraps off its native Mac app, currently in beta. My biggest complaint of Deezer on the web is that it always redirects to the offline page whenever the internet is briefly disconnected, or when the computer goes to sleep. The native client ensures that the music playback will resume from where you left it, but do note that for now, after quitting the app, it will still lose the playback progress.

Deezer for Mac also has one nifty little feature that scan your iTunes library and merge the collection with Deezer. It will then let you browse the songs you already own on Deezer, and stream them from any device.

Deezer for Mac is currently only available for Premium+ subscribers. If you’re one of them, you can download it here: http://www.deezer.com/beta/formac.
